"The Burg" Entry One: 14 Hours and 30 Minutes
During my first day with Gibsonburg High School athletics I worked the Freshman, JV, and Varsity basketball games versus Northwood in 1-5-2012. During this time I helped set up the gym including tables, chairs, microphones, scoreboard, and refreshment areas. This is the normal process for all home games at the high school. I was able to to observe my athletic director; Matt Harps's approach to managing the chaos during the games. Watching Matt juggle referees, parents, coaches, volunteers, administrators, and much more was an experience in itself. I enjoyed watching from afar and taking everything he completed in.
During my second day I worked the girls Varsity basketball game versus Cardinal Stritch on 01-10-1012. I helped set up tables, chairs, concessions, scoreboard, and team refreshments. After finishing set up I was put in charge of ticket sales and worked the door until halftime. After half time I spoke with staff and administrators about games and challenges facing the teams this season. Getting to know other administrators and coaches is an important part of and athletic directors job, as they all work together on scheduling, paperwork, and much more I have yet to learn. After the game ended I helped with tear down and lock up of the gym. Janitors are in charge of general clean up of the facility but the athletic director is in charge of equipment important to the athletic programs.

"The Burg" Entry Two: 20 hours
I continue to work the Varsity basketball games and run set up, tear down, and ticket sales. Matt additionally had me escort teams to locker rooms and referees to their quarters. In addition I was in charge of paying them and escorting them to their room at halftime and after the game. Matt had me help with the running of senior night at the Varsity football game against Toledo. We had four seniors graduating and honored them and their parents. Throughout the season Matt taught me the ups and downs of scheduling and rescheduling cancelled games due to weather. I met a lot of coaches and referee staff during my time interning the games.
Tiffin University Volleyball Entry One : 36 hours
I was offered a opportunity to work alongside Dana Cordova and Cheri Lindsay with Tiffin University's volleyball program. The first time I met with Dana and Cheri, they had me jump head first into hitting downballs in practice. This was nothing new for me, being a former volleyball player, however I did learn some new drills. I was able to meet all of the players and learn their positions. The girls are a crazy bunch to work with, but they are enthusiastic about the upcoming season.
I was able to see the other side of Dana's job by heading to the office before and after practices. I mainly work with Cheri setting up this summer's high school volleyball camp. We started with a vary short list of teams for the camp and have worked our way up to 21, which is great since our goal is 24. I looked up phone numbers and email addresses to schools, Athletic Directors, and coaches to recruit for the camp. I was also able to send and receive emails from home about the camp as well.

Tiffin University: Findlay Tournament 10 Hours
I was able to attend the Findlay tournament with the team on April 20th. We loaded the bus a little before seven to head to Findlay and played four games. We played Owens, Hillsdale, and Findlay. We did a pretty good job, especially defensively, but struggled at the net blocking and hitting. I kept track of the libero and scores during the games and sat on the bench with the team. It was a exciting tournament and we were very proud of the girls, in their last scrimmage before the season ended. The girls are on a no contact period until July.
Tiffin University Volleyball Entry Two: 10 Hours
I spent the day in the office with Cheri contacting coaches and schools in regards to the Tiffin Camp. I also talked to a few coaches about concerns and questions about the camp. Running a camp also entails a great deal of customer service in a way because not every coach is happy about the set up and expect immediate responses.
Tiffin University Volleyball Entry Two: 10 hours
During the no contact period I met with Cheri Lindsey, the Assistant volleyball coach a few times a week to discuss the Tiffin Camp and recruit more teams. I also sent and responded to many emails at home regarding camp and tournament information. We finished recruiting all the teams at a total of 22 and team packets will be finished by Dana Cordova when she is able to. The tournament will be Held July 11, 12, and 13 and my Team will be attending the camp.
Tiffin University Volleyball: 10 Hours
Today I met in Cheri Lindsey's office and we went through the uniform closet and organized and found me Tiffin University apparel. Afterwards we watched the girls run and open net practice with no coaching. I noticed that the girls did well running practice alone and everyone led each other.

On May 2, 2013 I received an email from Matt Harp my athletic director mentor that the head girls volleyball coach had resigned from her position. I was asked about interest in this position. One of my goals during my internship at Gibsonburg was to gain a position coaching, so I was very excited. I met with Matt on May 5 to discuss the job and I was asked to write a formal letter of interest and complete the application process, five days later I was officially offered the job and approved by the board of education. Matt and I discussed my new role and felt confident that after working with me I would succeed in this position. I was able to meet with my female athletes on May 21 during the lunch periods and introduce myself to many student (some of which I already knew) and discuss open gyms and camps information. The girls signed up for tryouts and were given calendars for the upcoming season.
"The Burg": 14 Hours
I was given the responsibility to schedule volleyball open gyms and order equipment for the program. I spent a few hours going through the equipment rooms and setting up equipment to make sure it was still functioning and appropriate for play. I checked uniforms and sent emails to coaches from the previous year about missing uniforms. I realized there was a large amount of equipment that no longer worked a huge item being our volleyball poles. I had set them up and realized the poles had defect that required ordering a new set. Matt showed me how to request new poles through the boosters and I appropriately filed the paperwork. The volleyball program has a lot to get done before season starts and I am starting on track to have everything done before season gets here.
"The Burg": 10 1/2 Hours
My first open gym had 36 girls including grades 7th-12th. This was great news, as last years numbers were only at 21 girls total! The first open gym was spent learning the girls names, finding leaders, and watching open play (as I can only coach ten days until the start of the season). IT was hard coming into a new group of girls with indifferent feelings on a new coach. I was able to hand out information on upcoming events and open gyms for the remainder of the season.
Tournament: 15 Hours
My team went to the Tiffin tournament over the weekend to compete with other teams in Ohio. This was the first time that I coached my team in a game like experience. The first day was rocky and it was hard to find a niche. So, on day two the girls and I went outside during our break an did some team building exercises. The girls are an incredible group and I learned so much from them. After a few hours of laughing and learning with each other we went back on to the court and played like an entirely different team. We were able to pull together and place well in the tournament.
Tournament:15 Hours
They began communicating and played like a well oiled machine that had been together for a log time. I learned a few things about the scheduling of tournaments and managing my team between games. It was hard keeping everything together and feeding the team during breaks, but I was able to manage it. Overall our team did well, especially after two injured players! We were 7 out of 26 teams and the team we played in the silver bracket finals was a D-1 school...We are a D-4!!!
"The Burg": 8 Hours
Open gym after the full weekend of tournaments was filled with steps toward fixing team dynamic and teaching a new middle hitter how to run in a quick offense with the Varsity squad. It was hard to teach footwork and fix quirks that kept popping up during the open gym, but I challenged my team to fix the problems before tournament the next day. I was proud of the way that they pulled together and I learned a lot about motivating a team.
"The Burg":10 Hours
I was able to take my girls to the Maumee Bay Spiketacular tournament to compete in a series of games. On day one I provided my teams with travel information, uniform information, pool play, and referee tasks. I also provided lunch for all the girls. The first game of the tournament my starting middle hitter went down on an ankle injury. In that moment I had my first real experience with handling an injury and how to handle the steps in bringing up a new player and handling the transition of a JV player to a varsity squad.
"The Burg": 12 Hours
During day two of tournament I started the day off with another ankle injury. The injury was again a middle hitter, in fact the new one I moved up from JV. The problem I had from here was that the other JV middle was at a softball tournament for the week. I had to adjust my entire team and move my starting outside hitter to a middle hitter. Luckily my hitters have been trained in diverse situations and we were able to adjust quickly to the move. We struggled throughout the rest of the day but still managed to pull off some tough wins.
"The Burg": 12 Hours
On day three of tournament we went to the silver final bracket. We started the tournament strong winning our way to the final match. We were playing a DI school and they were stacked with powerful hitters and a strong defense. The fact that we were missing a middle hitter took a toll on us at the net, especially against some very good middles. We played excellent defense an dug a lot of balls that were strategically placed and hard hit. Unfortunately after fighting to a deciding match we lost in three games and final game was 13-15! We are a DIIII school, so that was pretty impressive to me! There was so much that went into playing in a tournament and keeping up with the movement of game play and injuries. But, I learned a lot in the process!
"The Burg": 10 Hours
The last open gym before tryouts was filled with fun. I wanted to stress to the girls that the atmosphere of open gyms will be different from tryouts and practices for the season. The girls scrimmaged and had fun with each other and I jumped in and played with them. Coaching is not always about being a teacher, but showing your athletes that you are human too. Playing the game with the girls also gave them the opportunity to learn from me showing them how I communicate and move towards the ball. I think it puts the thought "If coach can do it, I can do it" mentality.
